Been self hosting for over 10 years before anyone coined the term enshittification. When i started, i could never imagine things getting THIS BAD with tech companies. I am happier and happier with my decision to self host things every day

Either this or a fairphone would be an instant buy from me if they were smaller. Modern phones dont fit into my pockets comfortably anymore

Some of the things in my house were set up so long ago, and running so smoothly, i havent looked at them in years (other than auto updates) now i’m afraid i’ve accidentally left some security hole without realizing it

For example, i set up cerbot 10 years ago and back then there was no DNS challenge, so i had to open my webserver to port 80 to renew… well since everything was running from https/443, i decided to block port 80

so i edited the systemctl unit for certbot to temporarily open port 80 for the renewal, and close it right after…

It was only 5 years later i realized i made a mistake and port 80 had been open for 5 years to the open internet

Probably no harm since its a public server anyway… defense in depth is the key

Finland already has very good datacenter companies, as one would expect…

I moved my VPS to a finnish company almost 10 years ago before data sovereignty was cool

Debian unstable is not a distro…

You cant complain about software breakage in a software that is still under development

you’d think so… but the number of friends and family who still put up with this shit is incredible. Ads in the start menu, copilot popping up every time you press a wrong button on the keyboard, the entire task bar changing overnight with ads and stock tickers…

That last one pisses me off so much… “i dont want to learn linux!”… MF’er, microsoft just rearranged your entire task bar and start menu overnignt and you didnt seem to have a problem adapting your workflow… why would switching to gnome or KDE be any different?

No, the endgame is for all the compute power to be in the cloud, and you rent time on their servers.

Everyone will just be running thin clients at home, with subscriptions if they need to do anything more than send an email

AI is just a tool. It can be used correctly to assist in making a gopd product, or a lazy artist can make slop (a lazy artist will produce crap regardless AI or not)

If its wrong to use AI to make filler material, then is speedtree wrong for allowing environmental artists to take a shortcut and not have to hand craft every tree in their game world?

like, minus all the plagarism and energy use issues. If wre are speaking strictly of artistic integrity or whatever, i dont see the problem in using AI to assist artists (as opposed to outright replacing them)

Also, it would be trivial for big tech to flood every fediverse instance with deceptive content and get us all shut down

Nobody is your friend… but at least proton isnt logging your data and selling ads into your inbox… that’s good enough for me…

Check your threat model… 90% of people arent doing direct action that needs protection from nation states… and proton isnt big enough to protect you from nation states. (pretty sure they tell you that they have to comply with legal, swiss laws)

Stop trying to scare people into going back to gmail… there will always be flaws in proton/tuta/whatever mail service…

Go try running your own email if you truly need perfect privacy and anonymity
