Not having read the article, I wonder if building an elevated array of photovoltaic panels over the batteries would make sense by shading them from the sun, giving more passive help with heat? A simple roof would be cheaper but solar panels would mean the site is also producing electricity, not just storing it.

A couple months ago a story came out of a court case that they would happily keep running ads that were identified as scams; they would just increase the advertising costs for the accounts running those ads. The more reports, the higher the price until they reach a limit to ban them. Basically if their users are getting scammed, they want a bigger cut.

I think we got one of those later. The first one they got was a monster of 1980s technology. It looks more like a news camera than anything for consumer use (although maybe not to actual news people).

You couldn’t record to laserdisc, right? My parents had a VHS camcorder with a selling point that it could also be used as a VCR (the recorder hung from a shoulder bag and could be separately connected to the TV). We have a lot of old home videos from that, and I remember us recording programs from the TV too.

Reading the article, Horizon Worlds is not shutting down, just the VR access. Apparently they’ve moved it to apps you access on iPhone and Android. I see the appeal even less; that seems like Second Life mobile.

Google started bringing fiber to neighboring towns and all of a sudden the cable company started offering speeds 3x faster for less money and AT&T built out a fiber network including in our town, which didn’t get Google for another ten years, and then only a franchise that was paying for the Google name.

Most Linux distributions offer a “live CD” experience (does not actually have to be on a CD nowadays; you can use a USB drive). Basically when the computer turns on you tell it to boot off the USB drive instead of the drive in the computer. That way you can try it out on your computer before installing it and see if it works out of the box for you with its defaults. It will probably be a little slower running off a USB drive. I don’t think you can typically install additional programs or save things to the computer (someone more experienced might chime in), but you can try doing basic things like using the web browser or word processor.

But copy is Command+C on macOS and iOS, not Ctrl+C. Maybe in the Classic Mac OS days, but I doubt they would’ve made such a significant change moving to OS X.

I’ve worked a number of jobs in TV, most behind the scenes. I’ve long said most of those jobs people at home wouldn’t know exist unless I make a mistake. That does not mean they were simple jobs.

Many people do not understand the amount of work that goes into other jobs they have never done, nor do they understand what makes someone good at that job.
