Fortunately I have media literacy and know that the existence of someone marketing a scary narrative doesn’t actually provide any credibility. I can read scary headlines and pass it through the “does the make sense?” filter before getting worried.

I agree the friction + manipulation that LLMs introduce is troubling, but “knowledge collapse” is the extreme end of that concern.

Related, an untrustworthy source that already has a cover for giving wrong information being controlled by a few entities who already lobby like crazy just being “trusted” to not use the platform for propaganda & misinformation.

Have the same phone for 6 years now, bring it into the shower most days, and have not had any issues.

Maybe steam has a non-zero effect but it’s pretty damn close to zero…

There are a lot of reasons to hate AI, I don’t really buy into this one. “New technology only captures a subset of knowledge” is just not a new issue, and fearmongering around it is not new either.

I would be concerned about language collapse (i.e. models incrementally forget vocabulary + fail to adapt to new terms leading to language becoming incrementally worse) before I would worry about knowledge collapse, and I’m not that worries about language collapse.

Hasn’t ubuntu always been the “non-tech friendly linux distro”? Their market niche was not being light weight.

The only thing keeping me sane is the knowledge that for the last several decades, Congress only voted for whatever they were bribed to vote for anyways. They’ve never voted one way or the other because they “understood” the subject matter.

They acted corruptly before, they’re acting corruptly now. Nothing has changed.
