42·3 months agoI’ve been thinking the same thing. The online tech community is a very small part of a much larger pie and they need to serve multiple audiences. As long as it can be turned off and truly be off, who cares?

Technology@lemmy.world•Verizon refused to unlock man’s iPhone, so he sued the carrier and wonEnglish
13·3 months agoRoach estimated he spent 20 or so hours on the suit, including arranging to have a summons served on Verizon and arguing his case in a court hearing. Roach didn’t get much of a payout considering the amount of time he spent, “but it wasn’t about that,” he said.
He did it himself and the ruling includes compensating for the costs associated with.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta’s AI Profiles Are Already Polluting Instagram and Facebook With SlopEnglish
36·1 year agoIt feels like Zuckerberg is out of ideas and just chases the trends to stay relevant. He was all in on the “metaverse” until he wasn’t because the concept disappeared. Now, he’s all in on AI because everyone else is. Even the quest, before it became the face of the metaverse, was him chasing another big idea from someone else.
He and the company haven’t had original ideas in a very long time. Even the smaller ones, like Stories and Reels, are just ideas copied from someone else.

I don’t think you understand how determined the buyers are once they’ve been convinced by the scammer. I used to work for a major retailer that had signs at the register AND messages that the customer had to accept on the signature pad confirming they didn’t believe they were being scammed before going through with the purchase.
Additionally, my team was instructed to call me over any time they had a customer who they felt was being scammed to try to talk to them. Sometimes, I was successful, but other times I wasn’t. There is still one guy who goes in weekly to buy $500 of various gift cards for his overseas “girlfriend” on WhatsApp. I tried talking to him multiple times and he became increasingly angry at the conversation. I just had to accept I couldn’t help him.
