I don’t disagree but I also want to flip that around. I’ve been recommended stuff which turned out to be a massive waste of time because it was not ready for general use yet, despite people telling me how easy it was. Then after complaining how that just wasted hour of my time people said "it’s free you are not entitled to anything.
If Linux isn’t ready for general users then we aren’t entitled to waste their time by saying it is.

X is a disaster. Wayland is an awesome display server but its input is a shit show for legacy software and software built around MS Windows quirks and this is a problem.
This is very true, but even after all this tine, somehow Wayland still doesn’t support many basic features and programs, making people (including myself) hesitant on the switch
Yes patience is important but people actually want to make the switch nowadays, but they still run into many issues which really need to get fixed in order for Linux to be a viable desktop OS.
Most good programs aren’t designed by billion dollar teams but by a few people (or even a single one) who pay good attention to UX and don’t treat it like a fifth class citizen. Linux is allowed to have the guardrails fall off for users who want it, but it’s 2026 and the experience for novice users is still worse than Windows 20 years ago.
Linus doing the world a massive favor by showing the flaws of Linux and still getting so much flak for it by the average Linux user is ridiculous.

Yeah cutting text with ctrl+k instead of ctrl+x (because that’s exit) and copying with alt +6 instead of ctrl+c.

Micro doesn’t need to list the shortcuts because it uses similar shortcuts to notepad and you don’t have to do weird ctrl+x to exist but ctrl+q (for quit). Also copy and pasting isn’t a nightmare in it.


micro for sure. But I dont use it as a main editor. Just for quick text file adjustments.

Windows doesn’t have these issues. Not that I use Windows for development stuff, but you can usually install any .exe for Windows10 on Windows 11. Even older stuff frequently still works and only sometimes requires running in compatibility mode.


Trying to do something like run ROS on anything but the Ubuntu distro it was made for.
Flashing an embedded board which requires Ubuntu 20.04 and didn’t accept me using 22.04

That’s true but on Windows it’s mostly just clicking install on everything on ninite. Linux libraries sometimes can’t even install on a newer kernel.
I can usually get old Windows programs to run on newer Windows versions. On Linux I rarely had that sucess.


The problem is that there’s so many different ways of packaging and also that Windows generally does static linking so old binaries work after a decade. Whereas old Linux binaries are generally dynamically linked and are dependent on some other old library which isn’t availible for [current kernel] and you get into dependency hell
Because AI used to suck and it no longer sucks as hard.
