  • For me personally it has gotten to a point where i kinda don’t care either way? I mean i do think more people using it is good, but as long as it does what i need it to do i’ll keep using it regardless. The way i see it even if linux becomes more and more popular, you can still feel quirky if you want by just using a more obscure distro. It still gets you the benefits of using linux, and if linux gets better support due to it’s popularity increasing you still get all the benefits, but at the same time you can also enjoy being part of a smaller niche community that is centered around these more obscure distros.

  • Hmm, yeah in my case the goal would be to actually speed up compile time of the kernel itself rather than speed improvements at runtime, but it does seem like a pain in the ass and your description makes it sound even worse lol. Nonguix substitution servers are working fine now though, and with my server being set up soon enough, if i the substitution servers are ever down again i can just let it compile everything once and then my other devices can just request it from my own server, so it doesn’t feel worth it to mess around with it anymore. But if i do ever feel like learning more about the kernel i might try it just for the hell of it.

  • I’m playing with the idea of maybe compiling a custom kernel at some point, but it would mainly be to trim out stuff i don’t need to speed up compile time (i’m using gnu guix, and a few months ago the nonguix substitute servers were down for multiple weeks, causing me to have to compile the kernel myself everytime it got updated). I have a 5800X3D as well and it doesn’t take too long, about half an hour i think, but i still think it’s annoying if you have to do it regularly. On my laptop it takes like 1.5 hours lol. I’m not sure if it’s worth bothering with though, cause i’m also in the process of creating a guix config for my server and then setting up the server so that i can offload builds to it for my other systems (it uses a 3900x).

Btw for how long have you had your 5800X3D? I think i’ve had it since 2021 or something like that, but i think the silicon is starting to degrade a little, cause this whole time i’ve also been running it with negative 30 offset, but i’ve been experiencing hard reboots these past months with errors in the logs indicating cpu-related errors. I’ve put the offset back on auto and it seems to be working fine so far, so i think it just might need a little more power to be stable.

  • Helix is a solid choice tbh. I’m not sure if it works on NixOS, but you could always try something like Doom Emacs that comes preconfigured, similar to things like Lazyvim on the Neovim side. But yeah Emacs is a lot to take in and can be a pain sometimes. I actually just got done troubleshooting and making some changes to my config to solve an issue i had where simple things like scrolling up and down in a file was causing very high cpu usage. I ended up figuring out the issue with the help from a kind redditor, but i was kinda on the verge of considering a different editor if i hadn’t manage to solve it lol.

  • If you’re just using it to declare packages and some configs then yeah you could definitely run like a post-install script or something on top of a minimal distro. I’ve done this for a while when i was using Void. It’s get trickier though when you consider that nix can also lock your config at a specific version of all the software you have installed, which i don’t think can easily be done on the average distro. There’s also the rollbacks, though i suppose you could use btrfs for that, but i’ve never tried it.

  • Haha, yeah i’m just goofing around, but at the end of the day, just choose what is most interesting to you. It’s kind of ironic how i got into Emacs anyway, cause before that i chose to use Helix instead of NVIM, cause i didn’t want to bother spending so much time configuring it. Then i tried Guix, which is a distro that you configure in Guile Scheme, so Emacs felt like the perfect fit for that, but in the end i still spent hours configuring my Emacs lol.

  • Just did a quick search and yeah apparently there aren’t really xbox controller drivers included in the kernel from what i can tell. I assumed it would just work cause it has been the case for all the controllers i tried, but i have never even owned an xbox controller so i never tested that. I figured such a popular controller surely would work ootb, but i guess not.
