Beyond the power requirements for the computer, there is also the power that will be needed to transmit back to earth.

A wireless link that can pass the amount of bandwidth needed (and do it reliably) will need huge power as well.

getting large datacenter level quantities of data from earth into space and back, and at low latency, is no triviality.

Latency is a huge issue, but so is bandwidth.

Land based data centers will have multiple hundred gig (and faster) fiber connections to the outside world.

Replicating that level of bandwidth on wireless links to a satellite in any sort of stable way is (as you said) no triviality. I would even classify it as near impossible.

That is becoming less “relatively easy” than it was even a few years ago. The CC companies are adding more steps than there once was.

I don’t trust big businesses to act in my interest, even when it is also very much in their best interests.

Witness the insurance industry flagging the risks of climate change an a massive risk to their industry, and then not using their immense marketing and lobbying power to push for changes that would ultimately result in better future profits (and even survivability) for themselves.

That is the way to prevent it.

But, frustratingly, most people who have one will probably connect it to the internet just because that’s what the manual says to do during the set up procedure.

It’s getting harder to find devices that don’t insist on being connected.

if it’s optional features I would never even touch then ehh whatever.

Until they push a software update to your device to force using the app for basic features…

This is far from a Nintendo exclusive problem.

It is the way entire industries are going (and have been going for decades).

It’s only strong consumer protection laws that stand in their way.

There are (admittedly inconvenient) actions I can take to reduce how much I’m tracked, and also to intentionally pollute a portion of the tracking data that they do collect.
