Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Portabase now handles backup/restore of Docker volumesEnglish
2·23 days agoNice. I’d like to change Linux distros on my server but the main thing holding me back was all my containers, sidecars, reverse proxies, etc. If I could easily back up and restore that would be amazing.

2·23 days agoIs there any competition or is this the first of its kind for Docker? Curious as I’m new to self-hosting.

Technology@lemmy.world•Majority of Americans support banning social media for kids under 16English
162·26 days agoEven if altruistic, your proposal to “ban it” is not consistent with free and open societies.
Also do you realize what we’re communicating on now can be considered social media. Should this be banned too?
“I don’t like xyz; ban it.” – that’s the same reasoning that ends up banning prolific books to “keep us safe.”
Nope not me. The masses just must be demanding it! 🙃
Does the update allow viewing tracks/routes for family member devices?
The workaround I’ve employed is simply logging into my wife’s account and her logging into mine to see detailed info, but if we had kids or more family members then it would be nice to get full tracks/routes and not only live location.
I set this up a week or two ago and have been quite pleased besides this hiccup. Thanks for all of your hard work!
(Also, for anyone curious I do like Colota on Android for the device tracking portion to accompany Dawarich.)
Does the new Dawarich mobile app show family member location now? Do you have plans for that? Visiting a web page on mobile isn’t ideal :)

Enshittification is a contagious disease that spreads slowly.

Loading prepaid debit cards at gas stations sounds like a rough life. I’d like to think that I’d have more conviction for privacy if it came to that, but everyone has their line I guess.

21·1 month agoDo you know if it works well with GrapheneOS?
I was using Traccar and that worked well until moving to GOS and then background updates wouldn’t work.
I tried owntrack and nextcloud but never got it to work.

3·2 months agoI haven’t heard of Zen and just checked out the wiki on it.
There are so many browsers! It’s hard to decide. I’ve tried quite a few over the years. Been running Brave as primary for 3-4 years.
I appreciate the Reddit link. Yikes. I’ve noticed the enshittification of Brave but didn’t know all the bad stuff they’ve done.
I do like that Brave works well on all my devices and sync is reliable. I don’t like running different browsers on diff platforms.
Time to do some testing and research…

8·2 months agoIt’s so hard to find good things as it is. Adding in politics of devs adds yet another layer to it!
I recently started using FUTO keyboard and then learned someone they associate with is a bad dude.
It’s like, come on guys. I’m trying to degoogle, avoid enshittification, and be privacy and security aware… and then there’s this curveball that I have to factor in too.

I use Dawarich on my server and Colota as the app on my phones. It is quite good but has some minor shortcomings with multiple devices and being able to see previous routes ONLY FOR THE ACCOUNT YOU’RE LOGGED INTO (so not family member phones) but is fine for live location for all devices. Also you use a browser to track location instead of an app which is a minor annoyance.
I had been using Traccar and liked that but after moving to GrapheneOS, the Traccar client would not stay running in background.
I tried FMD-FOSS and couldn’t get it to fully work. This serves a different purpose than those listed above and I ended up not really needing it.
I tried all of the other popular options and even linking one to Nextcloud and didn’t care for them or couldn’t get them to work. Reitti and GPS Logger worked but I prefer Dawarich and Colota.
