Completely wrong target for GrapheneOS. The GrapheneOS demographics, which I belong to, isn’t interested in high-end phones. They want a no nonsense simple phone with lots of storage and security first design.
- fancy AMOLED screen: don’t care
- 5 fancy cameras: don’t care
- super powerful CPU and GPU: don’t care
- storage space: yes please, I have photos and music to store locally!
This will be harmful to GrapheneOS project. It will go like this: no one buys the phone because it’s too damn expensive and full of features the privacy nerds like me don’t care about. Even fewer buy the phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed and it’s a total flop. Motorola stops the partnership saying “we did it and no one wanted it”. No other OEM wants to partner with GrapheneOS after that.
Yeah, still, id rather just go with a fairphone running linux. This whole phone and price tag is ridiculous, literally a monstrosity
How about two middle class cameras instead of 5 high-end, for a price point of 800 €…
I mean, is this on purpose, so they can say “nobody wanted it” ?
(slightly off on a tagent but relevent)
i mean at this point, i feel like phones are just hostile, and computers are the last bastion of freedom in the digital world. run linux, connect to phone hotspot then you are free to use whatever encrypted programs you want, bypassing “client side scanning” or whatever bullshit they want to implement. like… from how i see it, google will eventually kill the bootloader unlock from pixels, and the vast majority of phones, even if bootloader unlockable, does not have relocking with custom keys and also lineage is kinda insecure (at least thats that seems to be the internet consensus), even if it might be more private.
Phone should just be a “modem/router” thing, your gateway to the internet, the actual stuff should just be done on a portable computer. Australia already started a whitelisting thing for phone, its only a matter of time.
Still some space back there for a few more cameras.
Yeah no, even the 300-350€ (don’t remember it exactly anymore) I spent on my Pixel 9a were overpriced to me, I don’t even need half of the storage, RAM and CPU speed in here. We really need way less capable but equally as secure phones, who the fuck needs that much computing power to browse websites and write on Signal?
I didn’t know that for the sake of my privacy I have to spend such a sum of money, like it costs almost like an iPhone or a normal computer, it’s just crazy😱😱😱
F*ck me, 2000 dollars?! I really wanted to give this a go, but def not for that amount of money
i’m not sure what is justified but presuming they aren’t making money selling your info then they have to make up that cost elsewhere.
Well … guess I’m still going to be stuck with used older pixels. There’s no way in hell I’m spending 1900€ for a goddamn phone.
we and our 198 partners
My god
I like GrapheneOS but I don’t like it that much. 2 thousand dollars… God damn.
Well, this is defintely not good for the GrapheneOS project. they’ve already been criticized for being only accessible by techbros and people with sufficient resources to buy a Pixel. A lot of people were assuming a lower price from Motorola. This is crazy.
Yeah same, they also choose to drop support for phones as soon as official support drops which is a bit dumb (most firmware are feature complete and don’t have security issue, on the other hand not delivering OS updates with security fixes is definitly dangerous).
I much prefer the philosophy of LineageOS: you don’t want to throw away your 10 years old phone? Just put the latest android version on it and go on!!
I just bought a pixel 10a open box for like $350.
Like I get some people are stuck on Walmart specials, but how cheap does it need to be before its not considered a purchase for the privileged by you?
Well, its not just the money, its the fact that it is a Google product. Many of us, outside the USA don’t trust anything that Google produces, including Android itself (which is why degoogled phones are a thing) nor do we want to fuel the techno fascists running the company.
I’m outside the US. I brought several broken Pixels Pros & fixed them with Chinese parts. I run GrapheneOS on all of them. None of my money went to Google. I even sold one with GrapheneOS still installed & the buyer understood what that meant.
You don’t need to trust ungoogled phones, you just need to trust the forensic analysis, cyber security reports & new patches that point towards a cryptographically safe environment.
I hate Google as much as any of you Lemmies but there are ways. Plenty.
Ah y antes de que digan mamadas de privilegio y así… gano en axolopezones y estoy a la mitad entre bajos ingresos y pobreza 🫠
Grapheme runs tests on googles firmware regularly.
If it was actively doing something it shouldnt, they’d notice.
You could argue there could be something hidden in the firmware for use by the state when they REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get into something, and are willing to blow a good backdoor on it. But that’s also something you deal with on any modern PC, unless you wanna party like its 2011 and run an old FX-Series AMD chip, or a librebooted machine with ME Cleaner. (See Intel ME/AMD PSP)
The pixel is still a product of Google that Google benefits from when you purchase it. Some if us want to avoid contributing to their power as much as we can. Not purchasing a Pixel one of those choices.
Android needs to be replaced as well. I still hold hope for mobile Linux.
Google doesn’t own the PC market.
How brainrotted do you have to be to spend that much on a phone with a sealed in 2-year battery?
I thought that’s not even legal to sell in the EU anymore
That requirement applies from products released starting February 18, 2027 so afaik it released just in time to not be required by law to be user replacable.
Silicon-carbon batteries can last up to 7–10 years.
Surely at that price point it is designed to last 8-10 years.
What’s that, it has a glued-in 2 year lithium battery?
I recently ordered a Pixel 10a. Wasn’t too sure about about the future with Motorola phones in terms of GrapheneOS. With that price tag, it looks like a better decision for now…
